Ruby Hay Pianoforte Scholarship
2010 Competition. The 2010 Ruby Hay Pianoforte Scholarship Recital Competition will be held in the Maurice Till Concert Hall, Music Centre of Christchurch on at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday 31st October 2010. Entries close 5.00 p.m. Friday 1st October 2010. Adjudicator is Virginia Black (FRAM, Dip RAM) who has been associated with the Royal Academy of Music in London for most of her life, first as a student, winning many scholarships and prizes both on piano and harpsichord, as professor of harpsichord, a post she holds to this day and as a Postgraduate Tutor since 1998. She has been Chair of Postgraduate Diploma Studies since 2003. She is an examiner, moderator and trainer for the Associated Board and also was a member for the CT ABRSM course for several years. 2009 Competition The 2009 Ruby Hay Pianoforte Scholarship competition was held in the Chapel, Music Centre of Christchurch, on Sunday 1st November 2009. Congratulations to: Ruby Hay Scholarship recipient Gordon Lu performing Toccata from Partita 6 BWV 830 - JS Bach, "Waldstein" Sonata Op 53 - L Beethoven, Prelude XII (Book 2) "Feux d'artifice" - C Debussy. Lois Mackintosh Prize recipient: Bina Jung performing English Suite II in A Minor BMW 807 - JS Bach, Novelleten No 8 (Shehr Lebhaft) Op 21 - R Schumann, The Magic Circle of Infinity (MotoPerpetuo) from Nakrokosmos Vol 1 - George Crumb. IRMT Prize recipient: Anna Maksymova performing Prelude and Fugue in G# Minor Bk II - JS Bach, Sonata in Bb Major K570 - W Mozart, Moments Musicaux Op 16 No 5 - S Rachmaninov Other performers were Harrison Ellerm, Hao Wu. All particpants performed to an exceptionally high standard. Adjudicator: Barry Clark, Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. The Scholarship is an annual award of $1,000 provided from the bequest of the late Miss Ruby Hay, and is made to the entrant who is considered to be the most worthy as a result of a 30-minute competitive solo pianoforte recital. The Lois Mackintosh Prize of $200 is awarded to the runner-up. Competitors must be students of members of a Canterbury Branch of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand, or students of a tutor at the University of Canterbury. They must have lived in Canterbury for a period of not less than two years prior to the date fixed for the competitive recital, and must have attained the age of 15 years, but not have attained the age of 22 years at that time.
